1970-1971 ANECDOTES
THE OPEN GAME
LAW CHANGE:- If the ball is kicked into touch on the full from outside a player’s 22m, the line-out is brought back level with where the ball was kicked from.
This change was to have an immediate effect on the fluidity of the Bath game, and encouraged full-back Jim Waterman to initiate exciting three-quarters movements running from deep.
It could be said, that much of modern open rugby developed from this important milestone.

A SURFEIT OF TALENT.
Bath selectors had back-row difficulties in prospect. David Gay had signified his availability after a season with Harlequins, whilst Tom Martland was seeking to battle back to fitness. If they had pencilled in last season’s regulars – Roger Walkey, Robby Lye and Phil Hall, then there was a man-sized selection problem!

MANCOM 17/8/1970
Mr. T H Smith expressed concern that players’ match fees had not always been collected. Agreed that team Captains should be responsible to the Treasurer for collection of subs. Senior XV player to pay 5/- per match, and Colts 2/6.

MANCOM 7/9/1970
Resolved that no 1st XV player should be out of pocket, and should therefore be paid reasonable out of pocket expenses.
Mr Heindorff was concerned about Medical Treatment, and it was agreed that Mr Bardsley of Bristol be asked if he would be prepared to treat players. Players to obtain permission from a Club Official before receiving treatment.
Alec Lewis to be congratulated upon appointment as an R.F.U. Selector.
PLAYER ‘LONGEVITY’
It was Peter Heindorff’s 300th 1st XV game, Ian Duckworth’s 100th, Malcolm Lloyd was on 101 and Philip Hall reached 359.
Peter Glover was Bath’s sole selection for the England Trial at Wilmslow. (19/12/1970)

MANCOM 14/12/1970
It was reported that scrum half Malcolm Lloyd had torn an Achilles Tendon, and would be out of the game for some time. J Watkins had resigned as he was emigrating.

MANCOM 4/1/1971
Report that City Engineers proposed to carry out sewer works at the North end of the Recreation Ground during January and February. It was agreed to advise the Council that the Club would not tolerate the sewerage working being carried out during the  season.

MANCOM 21/6/1971
Mr John Roberts reported on the recent visit to La Rochelle. Unfortunately, the Club had been forced to send a weakened side. Nevertheless, their hosts were keen to maintain fixtures.

MANCOM 21/6/1971
Terms for a new 75year lease were in negotiation with the Parks Committee. Subject to this, Cyril Beazer had prepared plans for improvements to the North Stand and Dressing Rooms at an estimated cost of £10,000. It was agreed to proceed with the scheme, subject to the R.F.U. loaning the necessary funds. The Club was seeking details of Grants from the National Playing Fields Association.
The Development Sub Committee had received an application to tip at the Lambridge ground.
AGM 28/6/1971
Mr Reg Hillman advised careful consideration of the continuance of the Spartans XV, because of the high cost of running them.
Mr G S Brown proposed, and D M Smith seconded, Mrs Molly Gerrard as President of the Bath Club. This was the first occasion a lady had been elected, although she had previously served as a member of Management Committee.
