Played rugby for his school 1st XV and represented Bath Boys XV against Bristol Boys XV and Weston Super Mare Boys XV.

While at school he played alongside Peter Fale in the centre.

National Service with Royal Marines 42 Commando 1954-56

Tertiary education at Teacher Training College, Redland, Bristol 1957-59

Carnegie College of Physical Education Leeds-1960 where he played for 1st XV.

While in Bristol, played for St Brendans Old Boys RFC.

Emigrated to Australia 1961 drove an old Land Rover as far as Calcutta with his pregnant wife and another friend. Then onward  by cargo ship to Sydney

Bernard taught Physical Education in Secondary Schools in Australia and Papua New Guinea.
