Career details:

Son of the Rev Prebendary Wake, Vicar of St Cuthberts, Wells, who for nearly 20 years was the vicar of Castle Cary

Hereward was educated at Kings School, Bruton 1909-1914 and Marlborough College, Wilts 1914-1919 and Oxford University 1919-1923. He gained a scholarship to Marlborough in 1914 and  was awarded a scholarship to read Greats at Keble College, Oxford in 1918.

He first played rugger in 1915 for his House and the 2nd XV at Marlborough and the 1st XV in 1917 and 1918. At University he played only College rugby until 1922 when he was selected in the Oxford Trials for the first time and then appeared regularly for the Varsity, subsequently gaining his “Blue” at the end of term.
