CYRIL H G BEAZER

President  1962-1964 and 1977-1979

Chairman 1964-1967:1968-1969:1972-1973.

Cyril was born in 1908 in Marshfield. He was the only son  in a family of eight children. Both his father and grandfather were  stone masons.

Cyril started working with his father at the age of 13. Work was scarce so Cyril  moved to Bath to work for local firms becoming a stone mason himself and subsequently a General Foreman. Cyril soon started his own building business which eventually became the largest such business in  the City and then the SW of England.  During the 1930’s Cyril had  employed just a few men and, in World War 2 was mainly involved in war damage repair work in the City.  In 1956 C. H. Beazer Ltd. was incorporated.

Cyril was keen to recognise the talents and contributions of some of the club’s players and named some of the Company’s developments after some of the Internationals:- Carpenter House,(Broad Quay)  Frankcom House, (Forester Road) Gay Court,(Batheaston) Gerrard Buildings, (off Pulteney Street) Horton House, (Off Bathwick Street), Lewis House (Manvers Street) and Pitman Court (Gloucester Road.

Cyril had started playing rugby in the early 1920’s with the then junior side Bathampton, where he played for many years.

Although Cyril was a very successful businessman he spent a considerable amount of his time at the Club either on weekdays or at Committee meetings, and on Saturdays watching home and away matches.

Cyril became Chairman of the Club in 1962.

In 1972 Beazer Holdings ( a number of companies under Cyril’s control) having been denied permission to build flats at the rear of the clubhouse ( next to Pulteney Bridge), sold the land to the Bath Preservation Trust which created an open garden called the “Beazer Maze” and gave it to the City for public use. Many visiting supporters have enjoyed themselves trying to defeat the maze; not an easy task having spent time in one or more of the City’s hostelries!

Cyril was an outstanding contributor to the Bath Club. He was a well respected member of the Management Committee and was awarded Life Membership.
