On leaving school he became a regular member of the Ilkley Town XV

At the beginning of his second season with Bath he was selected at 2nd Row, proving to be a most successful change

Played mainly for Bath A

Derek was a whole hearted forward who revelled in work. He was always in the thick of everything and nothing could dampen his spirits – on or off the field. His habit of vocal encouragement to himself and his fellow forwards made him a marked man but he enjoyed any “rough housing” which took place.
