Career details:

Signed from the Bath Rugby Academy, and a member of the successful 2000 under-19 Cup winning side, centre Sam Cox had to bide his time for a chance at Bath Rugby. After impressing in the Bath United side, Sam made his first team debut in a young side that despatched Rotherham 42-19 at the Rec., coming on as a replacement for the legendary Jeremy Guscott. The Bath side was severely depleted due to the autumn international series, and therefore Cox was thrown into the deep end for the trip to Bristol a week later. His performances were good, and that was reflected in the New Year as he was selected for the England under-21 side for the under-21 Six Nations. Sam played against Wales, Italy, Scotland and France. When recalled to the Bath line up in March 2001 he settled in straight away and claimed a first Bath Rugby try in the 68-12 win over Rotherham at Clifton Lane. Sam ended the season by making an appearance at Twickenham as a replacement for broken leg victim Shaun Berne in the Zurich Championship Final. Two tries in pre-season (against Wasps and Munster) set him boded well and with Bath struggling with injuries again at the start of 2001/2002, Sam was included in the team at the start of the season, playing in six of the opening nine league games. He ended the season with eight appearances to his name and a second ‘official’ try in the 12-68 drubbing at the hands of Gloucester, before transferring to Bristol Shoguns via loan spells at Exeter and Caerphilly. Born in Marnhill, Dorset, and at Colston’s Collegiate from 1997-1999, further under-21 honours followed for Sam in 2002 with England as a centre partner to club mate Alex Crockett. Sam had earlier represented England at under-16 and under-18 level, as well as appearing for the South West Divisional side.
