Career details:

Simon Emms joined Bath Rugby midway during the 2000/2001 season from Welsh Cup holders Llanelli to ease the pressure on David Barnes, Chris Horsman and John Mallett who were the only three experienced props at the club. Emms, a sturdy if unspectacular player, made his debut on the 4th November 2000 in a Tetley’s Bitter Cup clash with old rivals Gloucester at the Rec. Playing in a front row with Mark Regan and the aforementioned Horsman, Bath struggled to come to terms with a physical Gloucester pack. On his day, Simon is a strong scrummager with superb foraging abilities and Jon Callard saw enough to give Emms an extended run in the side that saw him feature in 20 matches (14 as a starter). The 2001/2002 season saw Simon emerge as a cornerstone of the Bath pack, playing in 24 more matches as he, Barnes and Mallett rotated the prop roles between them. Such was the amount of hard work put in by these three, that Callard and latterly Michael Foley made the signing of another prop a priority for the 2002/2003 season, hence the arrival of Alessio Galasso. Foley was at pains to get across the message that this signing was to supplement the strength of the front row, not to replace the players who were already there. The Welsh born Emms would dearly love representative honours for his home country, but by plying his trade in England in a less than high profile position they have at the moment eluded him. Simon also had a brief spell with Bristol, playing against Bath in the Post-Chronicle Challenge Match in 1999 in a Bristol side that also boasted Mark Gabey, Jon Pritchard and a young Ross Blake.
